Hydropower is a form of renewable energy produced from moving water. Hydropower energy is produced when a stream of water released from a dam moves from a point of high elevation to a point of lower elevation. The water moves down through a penstock and pushes against a turbine to spin a generator. The amount of energy that can be produced by hydropower varies based on the volume of water available ad the change in elevation. Hydropower is the largest and oldest source of renewable energy used for electricity generation in the United States.
