How Solar Energy Works

Solar panels are covered in photovoltaic cells that face the sun to produce energy by absorbing the photons in the sunlight. The panels collect sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC electricity is then routed through an inverter that in order to deliver energy to the transmission lines, converts the DC electricity into alternating current (AC). 

Solar energy can also be harnessed through thermal power. In a thermal plant, the heat from the sun is concentrated on a basin filled with fluid which then produces steam to power a generator and deliver energy. 


Solar Panels

Solar panels can be configured in three different ways: fixed tilt, single axis or double axis. A fixed tilt panel, as it is described by its classification, is installed in a fixed position. Single axis panels can move back and forth on an east to west plane, following the sun as it moves across the sky. Double axis panels move back and forth to track the sun as it moves during the day and also north and south to follow the sun as the seasons change.
